M&S Archive – Rock around the Frock Event

Free on Saturday 8th July?  Join us for a day celebrating the 1950’s at the M&S Archive and their Rock around the Frock event!

The 1950s: Glamour came bouncing back and M&S embraced the optimism of the decade bringing new fabrics and the New Look to the high street. Join us for rock’n’roll dance classes, previously unseen 50s fashions, hair and make-up demos and special screenings of our wonderful 1950s cinema adverts – complete with popcorn!

This event is free and everyone is welcome, and we’d love to see your own 1950s outfits, so please dress to suit the decade if you’d like to!  We’ll be teaching two classes and there’ll be music to dance to in between these.

Class times 11:30am and 1:30pm

There’s no need to book, just drop in between 11am and 3pm on 8th July.

Location:

Lindy at Leeds Market 2016

On Sunday 11th December, teams of dancers from Lindy Fridays, Leeds University Swingsoc and Swing Dance Leeds performed routines and danced all day at Leeds Kirkgate Market in order to raise money for the NSPCC!

Many of the dancers involved are new to dancing and had never performed in public before so it was a huge challenge for them.  It was a fabulous day and everybody worked really hard – you can see videos of the performances on the Swing Dance Leeds YouTube channel.

The first Lindy at the Light took place in 2005.  Since that time, we have raised over £50,000 for the NSPCC!  We have a target of £5,000 this year and you can help us get to that target by visiting our Just Giving page and donating online.

If you’re donating online, you can use the following hashtags in your message to show your support for a specific group:

#LF for Lindy Fridays
#SwSoc for Leeds Uni Swing Soc

Let’s smash our target for this fantastic charity this Christmas!

Thank you for your support.

New Lindy Hop and Charleston Performance Courses!

Perform in a dance show with Swing Dance Leeds!

The Dance Studio Leeds is putting on a show on 8th October in aid of Yorkshire Cancer Research, showcasing the various dance styles that use the Dance Studio for classes/rehearsals. We are putting Lindy Hop and Solo Charleston routines into the show and would love you to take part! This sort of opportunity only comes up every so often and is a really rewarding experience.

In these courses, you will learn a choreographed routine, which you will then go on to perform at the show on 8th October. The details are as follows:

Lindy Hop Course dates/times:

Sunday 11th September 3-5pm
Sunday 25th September 3-5pm
Sunday 2nd October 3-5pm

Charleston Course dates/times:

Saturday 10th September 9-10am/11am-12noon
Sunday 25th September 9-11am
Sunday 2nd October 10am-12noon

Saturday 8th October – The Show!

The courses run for a total of 6 hours each (rather than our usual 4). However, the cost of the courses will still be the same as usual (£30) and you’ll get to perform on stage!

We’re specifically aiming the choreography at newer dancers, but the Course is open to anyone with previous Lindy Hop/Charleston experience.

The day involves a rehearsal on stage in the daytime followed by the show itself in the evening. As well as being a great opportunity to show off your skills on stage, and perhaps challenge you to do something outside your comfort zone, it’s also a fantastic opportunity to get involved in fundraising for a great charity. The fundraising page for the event is here: https://yorkshirecancer.everydayhero.com/uk/the-dance-studio-leeds

If you’re interested in either of these courses, please email swingdanceleeds@gmail.com to book.

Lindy at the Light 2015

On Saturday 12th December, teams of dancers from Leeds, York and Hull will be performing routines at The Light Shopping Centre in order to raise money for the NSPCC!

Many of the dancers involved are new to dancing and have never performed in public before so this is a huge challenge for them.  They have all worked really hard to learn their routines and will be performing at least 5 times between 12 noon and 5.30pm, so please do come along on the day to support them.

The first Lindy at the Light took place in 2005.  Since that time, we have raised over £44,000 for the NSPCC!  We have a target of £4,000 this year and you can help us get to that target by:

  • Coming on the day, watching the routines and putting money in our buckets;
  • Sponsoring someone you know who is taking part; or
  • Visiting our Just Giving page and donating online.

If you’re donating online, you can use the following hashtags in your message to show your support for a specific group:

#LF for Lindy Fridays
#SwSoc for Leeds Uni Swing Soc
#KS for Kingston Swing
#York for York
#Tap for Dance Studio Leeds Tappers

Check out Lindy at the Light on Facebook for updates about the event.

Here’s a video from 2014 which shows Leeds Uni Swing Soc’s great routine:
